Light that promotes well-being and gives children a voice
For children, a hospital stay is often an unfamiliar and challenging experience. This makes it all the more important to provide an environment that not only meets medical requirements but also fosters a sense of security, helps with orientation, and creates positive experiences. In the patient rooms of the Children’s Clinic at the University Medical Center Freiburg, the Schyns S700 medical supply unit, featuring the patented Schyns Biologic Health Light (HCL) technology, makes a special contribution to this.
The Schyns S700 combines state-of-the-art medical technology with a lighting solution that puts people first. With its understated and elegant design, the treatment unit blends seamlessly into the overall architectural concept of the patient rooms. The technology is deliberately kept in the background, creating space for a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere.
At the heart of the installation is Schyns’ patented 3-channel HCL technology. Not only does it provide biologically effective lighting that mimics the natural course of daylight, but it also opens up entirely new possibilities for interaction. One unique feature is that young patients can use the lighting to express their current mood.
Using a color wheel, children can choose their favorite color or spontaneously select the color that reflects their mood. Whether it’s soothing blue, cheerful yellow, vibrant green, or bold red—the light becomes a means of expression that goes far beyond traditional lighting. This creates an additional avenue for communication, especially for children who sometimes find it difficult to put their feelings into words.
This seemingly small feature has a big impact on everyday hospital life. It gives children a sense of autonomy and actively involves them in their surroundings. As a result, the patient room becomes not just a treatment area, but a space they can help shape. Many children see this as a playful diversion and a welcome moment of joy during their stay.
After a few minutes, the system automatically returns to the preset Human-Centric Lighting curve. This preserves the benefits of time-of-day-dependent lighting, which supports the body’s natural circadian rhythm and contributes to a pleasant indoor environment.
The effect of the lighting installation is particularly striking in the evening hours. When the rooms glow in different colors, the wards take on a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The colorful lighting accents give the children’s clinic a childlike, playful vibe and deliberately contrast with the often clinical hospital environment. As a result, the ward feels less anonymous and conveys an atmosphere of openness, creativity, and joie de vivre even from the outside.
This is made possible by Schyns’ patented 3-channel technology. Unlike conventional HCL systems, it allows for the combination of biologically effective HCL lighting with the precise control of colors within the RGB color space. This makes it possible to accommodate children’s individual color preferences without sacrificing the benefits of a modern human-centric lighting solution.
The lighting installation at the Children’s Hospital of the University Medical Center Freiburg impressively demonstrates how innovative technology can enhance the patient experience. It combines medical functionality with emotional value, creating an environment where children feel more at ease, can express their personalities, and experience a sense of normalcy in an extraordinary situation. In this context, light becomes far more than a technical fixture—it becomes an element that brings joy, comfort, and humanity to everyday life in the hospital.
